Be transported on the ARTery! Broomfield’s proposed creative corridor project is kicking off a pilot segment to design creative elements along trails throughout Broomfield.

Inspired by creative corridors found across the country, the ARTery aims to enhance the low-stress network of walk and bike paths with engaging art and culture experiences. Sections of these paths will be selected through multiple phases to be incorporated into the ARTery. These sections will be the new home of various types of cultural experiences, from pop-up to permanent. By discovering cultural experiences across the Broomfield, the ARTery will provide unexpected moments of wonder and curiosity - where you already are! The long-term, multi-year goal is to incorporate the ARTery into the complete low-stress walk and bike network throughout all five Broomfield wards to meet the following goals:

  1. Curate public art experiences to provoke curiosity, inspire wonder and create engagement in unexpected places.
  2. Enhance existing and future low-stress routes and trails throughout Broomfield.
  3. Connect neighborhoods, celebrate creativity and augment healthy activities in outdoor spaces.
  4. Cultivate a sense of one Broomfield.

Additionally, the City and County of Broomfield is working on an active transportation wayfinding plan and design standards, another identified priority in the Assessment that will also be piloted along this corridor, see BroomfieldVoice.com/Wayfinding.

Phase 1

The first phase will be a pilot segment connecting two hubs, The Field Open Space and Broomfield Commons Open Space, and includes proposed public art installations. This low-stress route provides paved trails for walking, running, and biking though beautiful parks, playgrounds, open space and neighborhoods. On the map below, green icons are existing public art, house icons show possible and prioritized locations for the public art pilot project described below and yellow icons are hubs that include a variety of places to visit and things to explore!

In partnership with the Arts, History and Cultural Council, the City and County of Broomfield is excited to launch the first-ever sidewalk mural project(External link) as part of the first phase of the ARTery! This project incorporated new priorities and goals to align with the new Art in Public Places Plan, developed by the Public Art Committee in 2021:

    • Select three pairs of artists, each pair composed of one professional and one emerging artist to create work together through mentorship.
    • Utilize a Request for Qualifications to select artists based on their commitment to community engagement and collaboration, and have the interactions with neighbors inspire their final artwork proposals.
    • Provide multiple opportunities for the Broomfield community to participate, including during the mural installation!

Photos of the three sidewalk murals installed on the ARTery. The first depicts a duck walking with her ducklings, the second butterflies on a colorful background, and the third the lifecycle of a ladybug.

Thank you to the artists, the Arts, History and Cultural Council, all of the wonderful volunteers who helped paint stencils, and everybody that participated in the ARTery sidewalk mural. Special thank you to the Broomfield Parks team and Broomfield Streets team for helping to make the project happen.

This Art, History, and Culture Council Committee selected finalists for the ARTery sidewalk mural project. The artists selected for this project are Katerina Vuletich and Paige Brown, Ratha Sok and Jennifer Vasquez and Jennifer Chaparro and Camie Rigirozzi. This project was built in coordination with Parks, Recreation and Senior Services and Open Space and Trails, as well as artist selection through the Arts, History and Cultural Council. For the call, artists self-identified as either professional or emerging to be paired for mentorships, and all three semi-finalist pairs were selected as finalists. All three pairs participated in community engagement that ultimately informed their designs.
