Skatepark Reopened on April 15, 2023!
Project Summary
Evergreen Skateparks completed their work at the Skatepark Refresh-- the skatepark reopened Saturday, April 15,2023! The City and County of Broomfield gathered public input on potential upgraded and proposed design alternatives beginning in late 2022. Thank you for being so patient during the 4 weeks of construction. The refreshed skatepark includes repairs to coping, cracks and other concrete degradation as well as the addition of a new beginner bowl and some bank, ledge and curb features. The City and County of Broomfield also replaced the red crusher fines adjacent to the parking lot with concrete and completed irrigation and landscaping repairs adjacent to the skatepark.
Skatepark repairs and expansion construction work began on Monday, March 20, 2023. The skatepark was closed during construction, which took about 4 weeks to complete. The final design mimics the concept drawings presented to the community in January 2023 after taking into account the feedback received throughout the project. A rendering of the final design is shown below; the project is "design-build" which means final adjustments will continue to made in the field during construction. Following Evergreen's work, a local concrete contractor will replace the red crusher fines adjacent to the parking lot and both irrigation and landscaping repairs will be completed.
Project Background
The current Broomfield Skatepark was completed in 2011 and it’s time for a refresh! The City and County of Broomfield hired Evergreen Skateparks to design and construct repairs, improvements and a small expansion at the Broomfield Skatepark. The goal of the project was to enhance the skatepark by making repairs, adding features and expanding to add more beginner-level terrain.
Public Outreach
In November and December 2022, the City and County of Broomfield and Evergreen Skateparks solicited survey responses about what skatepark users would like to see changed, added, repaired, or kept the same. This input directly influenced the conceptual design of this project. On January 17, 2023, the City and County of Broomfield hosted a virtual public meeting at which Evergreen Skateparks shared concept designs and gathered input that will influence the final design. An online survey collecting feedback was available until January 26, 2023.
Project Scope
Evergreen’s scope of work includes:
Repair. This includes bottoms of banks into the street area, concrete coping on the small quarter pipe and pool bowl, damaged grout joints between concrete blocks and replacing missing tile in the bowls. If it’s a safety issue, it’s getting repaired.
Replacing Red Crusher Fines. The red crusher fines surrounding the park will be replaced with concrete by a local contractor following Evergreen's work. (Label 2)
New Features. Where possible, new features will be added to enhance the user experience at the park (Labels, 3, 4, and 5)
New Beginner Terrain. A beginner flow area is being considered to the southeast of the bowl area. (Label 1)
Project Constraints
Unfortunately, the existing skatepark sits within the regulatory floodway and floodplain. The City and County of Broomfield has hired a separate floodplain consultant to work alongside Evergreen to maximize the opportunities for enhancements while meeting floodplain permitting requirements. There’s still a lot of opportunity here, but the project will be limited, especially in the red-hatched areas shown on this floodplain map.
