For the past three months, the Open Space, Parks, Recreation, and Trails (OSPRT) Plan Refresh team has been meeting Broomfield community members where they live, work and play to listen and gather feedback on their priorities for the future of Broomfield’s OSPRT.

The team used a variety of engagement methods to connect with a large and diverse audience to understand how the growing community’s wants and needs may have shifted since the last OSPRT Plan was updated nearly 20 years ago. With an emphasis on inclusion, the City and County of Broomfield targeted a diverse group of community leaders and members, including school officials, athletic groups, advocacy organizations working with low-income, BIPOC and immigrant populations, English as a second language populations, people with disabilities, older adults, youth, and many more.

A key mechanism for gathering input included the broad distribution of a survey, which was offered in the top five languages spoken in Broomfield (English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Hmong). Additional outreach efforts included a series of focus groups with key stakeholders; 18 pop-up events; broad distribution of survey promotions to over 15,500 homes through utility bills and direct-mail; posted signage at 32 of Broomfield’s most frequented parks and trails; notifications to Homeowners Associations; and digital communications through email newsletters, social media and digital displays throughout the community.

While the analysis of Phase I qualitative and quantitative data is in the early stages, initial key themes and priorities include the following:

  • Broomfield’s OSPRT directly contributes to the mental and physical well-being of community members, and there is a strong desire for more open space, parks and trails;

  • Community members want improved connectivity to trails and destinations, and they hope to see more signage and maps for better wayfinding;

  • Broomfield community members desire more shade in parks, trails and open space, both from trees and from man-made structures;

  • There are currently limited public transportation options available to get to OSPRT facilities, which can limit access for people without alternative transportation options; and

  • While the majority of community members feel safe and welcome at OSPRT facilities, there are a few improvements identified to increase these feelings, such as reducing encampments, increased facility maintenance, more and better signage, and enforcement of the leash law for pets.

A more comprehensive summary of survey data and community input will be posted in the early fall. This will include more detailed feedback from specific groups within Broomfield’s diverse community.

Phase II of the Plan Refresh will include continued discussions with community groups and a finalization of the community feedback summary. It will also include a technical analysis of the plan, a review and finalization of the comprehensive goals of the new OSPRT Plan, and the initial draft of the revised plan.
