The 2022 Broomfield Engineering Standards and Specifications were adopted by City Council.  On June 14, 2022 Broomfield City Council approved the  2022 Broomfield Engineering Standards and Specifications.  This update included revisions to the street standards aimed at modernizing roadway cross sections to include best practices in street design for all modes of transportation.

You can learn more about the history of this project, including how community input shaped the outcomes by reading below.

Project Summary

In 2021, and continuing into early 2022 Broomfield updated the street sections included in the Engineering Standards and Specifications. This project was undertaken to ensure Broomfields street standards met modern day best practices. The revised street sections ensure Broomfield meets best practices for all modes of transportation including bicycling and walking. These revised standards take into account guidance released by the Federal highway Administration and standards from the Colorado Department of Transportation for street sections.

At the June 14, 2022 City Council meeting the updated Engineering Standards and Specifications were adopted.

Why is this happening?

Over the past two years Broomfield City Council has identified transportation as one of its key planning focus areas. In the spring of 2021, with the support of City Council, Broomfield’s, Community Development, Parks, Police, Open Space and Trails, Public Works, department staff, and staff from the North Metro Fire District began collaborating to update Broomfield’s street standards.

Best practices for complete street designs have changed significantly over the last decade, in particular, for bicycle and pedestrian facilities. New guidance has been made available from the Federal Highway Administration, the State of Colorado, Denver Region Council of Governments, and other nationally recognized sources. Additionally, in 2016 Broomfield adopted the Transportation Plan, which provided policy guidance directing staff to plan for all modes of transportation, all ages and abilities, and to help reduce dependency on single occupancy vehicles. Primary goals of this effort include improving the safety and comfort of the City’s transportation facilities to ensure travelers have more options for getting around the community.

Broomfield staff have reviewed the current best practices and evaluated maintenance strategies for new facility types to develop the proposed street sections included below. See the presentation about the street section update to the Broomfield Transportation Forum here.

What streets does this apply to?

Generally, the new street sections will apply to all new streets being constructed in Broomfield and will help guide developers by establishing expectations for street standards. These standards will not replace existing street standards agreed to in approved planned unit developments like the Baseline Development in northeast Broomfield.

Review the proposed Street Sections

Broomfield staff created drawings of the proposed street sections for public review.

Engagement Summary

Broomfield solicited public feedback about the proposed street sections on this Broomfield Voice page in the fall of 2021, running through November 28, 2021. In total Broomfield received 9 public comments about the proposed street sections. Generally comments were not related to the proposed changes to the street sections. Rather they were mostly related to perceived traffic safety issue in the community. Two comments directly supported the proposed changes and no comments were against the changes.
